Alert for IE7 and lower with this WordPress plugin

Wordpress Plugins

Though some might say it’s too soon to start dropping support for Internet Explorer 7, generally speaking that may actually be the case for many websites. But if your web stats do make a case for dropping IE7 (as mine do), then let’s pretend I made this plugin especially for you and I.

Just follow the usual steps:

  1. Upload into wp-content/plugins
  2. Activate

If the website visitor is using Internet Explorer 7 or lower, a friendly nag will appear at the top of every page (which cannot be dismissed) and includes icons with links to download Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari.

Grab it from the official WordPress repository here, or search for Old IE Alert from within the Add New plugin area of your Wordpress website.

You’re welcome.

Hey thanks. I’ll just assume it works because I don’t have ie6 or 7 to test it on!

    		Hi Skydrop,

I can see the alert appear and then suddenly disappear when the page finishes loading – which technically should not happen given it should only show at all if on IE7 or lower.

That said, your issue forced me to look at my plugin again and I have now just updated to remove a potential problem (though I had no problems on the 32 themes I tested it on). It may solve it for you or may not. Worth a shot.

    Good luck.

I’d like to see the possibility to translate the text from the WordPress backpanel.

Hey. I love the plugin, exactly what i was looking for. Is it possible to change the text on the warning?

    		@Mike

Thanks! Yeah you can edit the text and it’s so simple that it wasn’t worth including an editing function for the plugin. Just go to wp-content -> plugins -> old-ie-alert and open old-ie-alert.php. Look at lines 73 and 74 and edit to your hearts content.

Is it possible to be able to close this for the session the user is on? Or have that option in the backend?

Hi Jim. Can you explain further on what you mean? Thanks.

    		Why does everyone forget OPERA?
It’s a lovely browser and it gets better every day.
